The BBC’s report also mentions that police have found no explanation for the star’s death but are not aware of any suspicious circumstances.

George Michael has had his fair share of health scares in the past, including a bout of pneumonia that – according to The Mirror – nearly killed him in 2011. He was also involved in a serious car crash in 2013. In 2014, the singer announced he had quit drugs completely after a much-publicized battle with addiction.

During his career, George Michael sold more than 100 million record around the world, according to The Guardian.

Today, following news of his death, plenty of fans are expressing grief and recalling their favorite songs by the singer.

“Nearly fell out of my chair when I heard about George Michael’s passing earlier,” tweeted Alex Kalogiannis.

Fellow pop star Elton John wrote, “I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend – the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans.”
